A Rosario was arrested by federal authorities in the United States for selling the Bitcoin cryptocurrency to hundreds of people.

Bitcoin is a digital currency that is used as a payment and merchandise system, and that is characterized by not being backed by any government or central bank.

The detainee was 21-year-old Jacob Burrell Campos who faces 31 federal crimes against him including illegal operation of a financial business, conspiracy for financial transactions, evasion of anti-money laundering laws, and 28 money laundering charges, reported the authorities of the United States Federal Prosecutor's Office in Southern California.

According to the accusation, Burrell Campos bought Bitcoin coins with a value of more than 3 million dollars in 2 thousand 600 different transactions, which he sold for cash and through bank deposits, without investigating the buyers.

Due to the transactions mentioned, the defendant must have been registered as a financial business, said the tax lawyer, Robert Ciaffa.

Burrell Campos was arrested when he crossed the border from Mexico to the United States through the Otay port, on August 13.

The defendant, who was born in San Diego but resides in Rosarito, faces a maximum of up to 20 years in prison for each of the 28 money laundering offenses against him, plus a maximum of five and 10 years in prison for the other crimes against him.

The defendant also faces fines of up to $ 500,000 for money laundering charges against him.

The case was investigated by the National Security authorities of the United States, the Internal Revenue Service, and the Postal Inspection Service.
